Our hotel was across the street from the House of Blues and John Primer, an old style Blues legend way playing. We got in for free by mentioning Blues Fest (bonus!) and got seats right by the stage. John Primer put on a spectacular show. His band, especially his harmonica player, were amazing as well. I got an autographed CD and was able to tell him how much I admire him and how talented he is. That was a great moment for me.
On Sunday, we had breakfast at a fairly new Chicago chain called Protein Bar that has many vegan options, all clearly marked. I had a big salad with tofu and chia seed dressing for my late breakfast and Simon had a big vegan burrito. We both had some kombucha, a fermented drink that we love. I am thinking of making my own kombucha soon.
Sunday afternoon and evening were some of the highlights of the trip for me. We had a big Protective Diet picnic in Grant Park and I got to meet Julie & Jerry, the owners and creators of Protective Diet (www.ProtectiveDiet.com). I am a huge PD fan and almost everything Simon & I eat are Julie's recipes from Protective Diet. Julie believes in a whole foods plant based diet with no oil, no sugar, and no nuts. Removing those fats, even plant based fats, is what helped me drop the last 25 pounds and easily reach my goal weight.
Marci, the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn twin in black, joined us for our picnic. She has lost a lot of weight with PD and is looking amazing. She made a tasty pasta salad with a kick, fresh jalapeno, and garlicky dill pickles. Julie & Jerry brought grilled portabello mushroom & veggie sandwiches with Julie's new BBQ sauce, grilled corn, fresh kohlrabi, and watermelon. We brought PD mustard herb potato salad from our road trip cooler and it was a filling, delicious, healthy picnic.
Julie and I got to talk a lot about running plant based businesses, teaching, and coaching. Simon and Jerry got on great and we chatted all night, finally making our way to dinner at 10pm. We managed to find some veggie tacos near our hotel, not many restaurants open at 10pm on Sunday. We said our good-byes around 11, it was SO FUN for me to meet one of my biggest plant based teaching mentors. We hope to see Julie & Jerry and more Protective Diet friends soon.
What a great weekend, thanks for letting me share. I need to blog more often, so each one doesn't become a novel :-). I have been working on a new service, the Nutrition Intervention, I am trying it out with family tomorrow and will offer it on my website soon. It is an all day service where we choose recipes, clean out the pantry, grocery shop together, cook together, and stock your house for success on a healthy plant based diet.
I also had my first CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) pick up of a load of fresh organic veggies from my farmer in Clare. It is delivered to the Midland Farmers Market each week. I will be posting on that soon.
Stay healthy my friends!
