Simon and I are going backpacking today, this should be an adventure. He is really into backpacking, hiking, and camping with his friend Stephen. They go all over Michigan and even bigger trips to Colorado and possibly the Ozarks in the future (my idea, I spent summers in the Ozarks as a kid, so gorgeous). I have occasionally camped or hiked with Simon, for instance on our trip to Yosemite, some hiking has to be involved if you are in Yosemite. NOT without a lot of whining, crying, and sighing on my part as Simon had to walk behind me and sometimes literally PUSH me up the trail.
I think I was traumatized in childhood by Grandpa Arnold who loved to take us little kids on hikes when we were camping all over Michigan. A hike to Grandpa was probably a brisk mile or two in the morning. To a 5 year old, it seemed like 100 miles, or at least it did to me. I haven't progressed much on the whining front.
I have no idea why I was possessed to sign up for an REI wedding registry, probably because Simon gets so excited about REI shopping. So, I said 'go ahead, sign me up for a good backpack, some walking poles, a comfortable tent that will fit both of us and the dog, a decent sleeping bag, etc.'
Well, we received the REI wedding gifts. We did a trial run in the tent in the front yard last month. Time to pack up that gear and hit the trail. We are heading to Hoist Lakes Trail in Alcona County, just for an overnight with our friends. We are taking our dog, Riley, too. He will love it. I hope I enjoy it and don't whine too much. At least it's Michigan and will be nowhere near as steep as Yosemite. It has been cold at night, so I am packing plenty of layers. It was 40 degrees this morning. In August. Brrr!!! I will be prepared though.
We did a quick google search for 'Vegan Backpacking Food' and found some good ideas. I need to get cracking this morning on putting together our camp food. I will share a few pictures of our vegan backpacking adventure in my next post. Until then, slice up a huge tomato and enjoy a tomato sandwich my friends!
